How to Conduct Your Waste Audit

This simple exercise will reveal surprising insights about your consumption habits. Don't judge yourself - just observe and learn.

1

Gather Supplies

Collect everything you'll need for the audit

Notebook or spreadsheet for tracking
Scale (kitchen scale works)
Camera or phone for photos
Large plastic sheet or newspaper
2

Set Up Your Station

Create a designated space for sorting waste

Find a clean, well-lit area where you can spread out. Cover the surface with plastic sheeting or newspaper to contain any mess. Have good lighting so you can clearly see and photograph items.

3

Collect Your Waste

Gather all waste from your normal day

Instead of throwing things away immediately, collect them in a designated container
Include all household waste: trash, recycling, compost
Note what time of day items were generated
4

Sort and Categorize

Organize waste into meaningful categories

Food Waste
Scraps, peels, expired food
Packaging
Plastic, paper, cardboard
Paper Products
Tissues, napkins, junk mail
Miscellaneous
Batteries, light bulbs, etc.
5

Record Your Findings

Document what you discover

Count and weigh items in each category
Take photos for visual reference
Note any patterns or surprises
6

Reflect and Plan

Use insights to guide your zero waste journey

Reflection questions: What surprised you most? Which categories had the most waste? Where do you see easy opportunities for reduction?
